Frequently Asked Questions
Do You Take My Insurance Plan?
I am not on any insurance panels, which means that you are responsible for the full fee for each session. I am happy to provide you with a "superbill" for out-of-network reimbursement, upon request. You are able to submit this to your health insurance provider, and depending on your employee benefit plan or private health plan, it may be possible for services to be covered in full or part by your plan if they include out of network coverage for mental health services. If you choose this option please note that these itemized "Super Bill" will be created once weekly and should be sent to you or available in your portal account the Friday following your most recent session.
What Should I Expect in My First Session?
The first therapy session can be a source of anxiety for some people. If you are nervous about your first therapy session, that’s normal. Remember that the goal of the first session is for the therapist to get to know you. I will do that by asking questions about your life, your background, and what brought you to therapy. We will also explore what some of your goals might be from coming to therapy.
Do I Have to Talk About Things I Am Not Ready or Don't Want to Share?
In most instances, what you discuss in therapy stays in therapy, unless you give permission otherwise, which makes it okay to be completely honest. You may sometimes discuss difficult topics with your therapist, such as feelings of grief, a traumatic experience from your past, or mistakes you have made within a relationship. It can be difficult to be honest about such topics, but if you want to make progress with treatment and work through your problems, honesty is the best policy. Exceptions to confidentiality might be if you are having feelings of harming yourself or others, or if you have committed an act of child abuse. In these instances, I might be required by law to break confidentiality in order to protect you or someone else.
What is Structural Family Therapy?
Structural family therapy is a type of therapy that focuses on the interactions between family members. Looking at the family as a system, structural family therapists work to improve communication between members of the family and encourage adjustments in the rules that govern how the family functions (its structure).

What is Play Therapy?
Play Therapy is not the same as regular, everyday play. While spontaneous play is a natural and essential part of the developmental process, Play Therapy is a systematic and therapeutic approach. Play therapy is a type of therapy where a therapist uses play, toys, and games to help the child explore, express, and safely experience the difficulties they are working through. Using play, the therapist uncovers insights otherwise unable to be heard and recognized through normal dialogue. Kids explore for understanding physically, so play therapy is the most developmentally-appropriate way to approach child therapy.
What is Sand Tray Therapy?
Sand tray therapy is a therapeutic approach that uses expressive, hands-on techniques. The therapist or counselor holding the session will encourage the client to express themselves by creating a safe, imaginary world with a variety of figurines, toys, and props. These objects might include “real life” figurines such as trees, people, houses and animals, or imaginary figurines, like wizards and monsters. These toys and tools, which are carefully selected, allow clients to create aspects of their inner or outer worlds in a tray of sand. These objects represent words and the person’s creation is a language. Sand tray therapy is a healing process which helps the client work through any painful conscious or unconscious memories. At the end of the session, the therapist and client will reflect on and discuss the underlying meaning behind the creation.
